VIJAYADASHAMI 2026
Dussehra 2026: October 20 or 21?
The short answer is October 20 for the widely observed Dussehra holiday. October 21 also appears for Bengal Vijayadashami and immersion rites. The difference comes from tithi and regional rules, not a broken calendar.

The direct answer
Most Indian calendars observe Vijayadashami or Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Government of India holiday calendar also lists Dussehra on October 20.
Some calendars show Wednesday, October 21 for Bengal Vijayadashami, Durga Visarjan, or a regional closing observance. Both entries can be internally correct because Dashami tithi crosses the boundary between the two civil dates.
Why two Dussehra dates appear in 2026
A Hindu festival is not assigned simply because a date begins at midnight. Panchang decisions use tithi, local sunrise, parts of the day such as Aparahna, and rules specific to the ritual.
Current Karnataka panchang calculations place Dashami tithi from about 12:50 PM on October 20 until about 2:11 PM on October 21. They assign the main Vijayadashami observance to October 20 and Bengal Vijayadashami to October 21. Exact clock times vary slightly by city.
This is also why a search result, office holiday list, temple notice, and Bengali family calendar may appear to disagree. They may be answering different questions: the national holiday, the Vijay Muhurta, the day for immersion, or a regional sampradaya.

What Vijayadashami brings together
Dussehra carries several stories and practices. The Ramayana tradition remembers Rama's victory over Ravana. Shakta traditions remember Durga's victory over Mahishasura. In Karnataka, Mysuru Dasara gives the festival a royal and civic expression. Families may perform Shami Puja, Aparajita Puja, Ayudha Puja, Seemollanghan, or Vidyarambham.
The common thread is not the celebration of force for its own sake. It is the restoration of dharma, the disciplined use of capability, and the beginning of learning or work with greater clarity.
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत। अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम्॥
Yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati Bhārata, abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmy aham.
Bhagavad Gita 4.7 speaks of the renewal of dharma when disorder rises. On Vijayadashami, the verse can be read as an invitation to restore order first in one's own actions, commitments, and use of power.
A simple, grounded way to observe the day
- Use a panchang set to your city if a ritual requires an Aparahna or Vijay Muhurta.
- Clean and respectfully arrange the tools, books, instruments, or devices through which you learn and work.
- Offer Shami leaves only where the practice is customary and environmentally appropriate.
- Begin one realistic piece of study, repair, or disciplined work instead of expecting the date to complete it for you.
- If your family follows Bengal Vijayadashami on October 21, treat that tradition as a regional rule rather than an error.
